Creating Drop Shadows

In today's assignment, you will practice using the shading, grouping, and duplicating features. This will prepare you for the next project that we will begin on Thursday.

Perform the following tasks:
  1. Open Quark and create a document with all margins .25 (Be sure to DESELECT Automatic text box)
  2. Pull a ruler guide to 5.25" on the vertical ruler, and pull a ruler guide to 4.25" on the horizontal
  3. Draw a box with the rectangular picture box tool that is directly in the center of the ruler guides (The intersection of the "X" should be joined with the intersection of the ruler guides). Be sure to make the box big enough to fit on the whole page.
  4. Fill the box in with a color of your choice and change the shading to 30% (Refer to handout on shading)
  5. Create a frame around the box using any style and width (bigger than 2 points).
  6. Change the color of the frame to anything that you wish.
  7. Select the box and duplicate it.
  8. Select the second box and fill it black with 100% shading.
  9. Send it to back (Item > Send to Back)
  10. Place the black box so that it creates a shadow effect.
  11. Insert a text box and type "Drop Shadow Example" in any font that you choose above the square. The font size should be at least 24.
  12. Lastly, create a text box with your name, date, block and subject.
  13. Print the document and submit.

Save it in your MP1 folder as Drop Shadow practice

Working with Graphics in QuarkXPress

In today's assignment you will be learning how to properly insert graphics into Quark. This is a very useful tool, as many of the projects you will be completing will involve the use of images.

There are few things to keep in mind when working with graphics:
  1. ALWAYS create a picture box BEFORE inserting the graphic. (The graphic will not be able to be inserted without doing this)
  2. Be sure that the graphic correctly represents the message of the publication.
  3. Make sure to fit the graphic to the picture box.

When you are finished with BOTH assignments, print them out to the 4700 and save them to your MP1 folder as Working with graphics 1/2.
